Vooma Vaccination Campaign to minimise travel for residents in far-flung rural areas

The North West government says the ongoing Vooma Weekend Vaccination Campaign will help the province to vaccinate more people because sites are open on weekends.

Premier Bushy Maape launched the provincial leg of the vaccination drive at Mabeskraal, outside Rustenburg. He says they are also getting to far-flung rural areas, to minimise travel expenses for people.

The Vooma Weekend Vaccination Campaign was established to increase the number of vaccination sites nearer to communities in towns and villages.

Premier Maape took his Pfizer vaccine at Mabeskraal. He says communities will have more vaccination sites closer to their places of residence.

“We have experienced problems where the vaccination sites are a distance from the people. So, this is part of the campaign, to ensure that people vaccinate. We really want to improve our performance. And this today has indicated clearly that people are prepared to be vaccinated.”

A local traditional leader, who is also the chairperson of the House of Traditional Leaders, Moshe Mabe encouraged his colleagues to take the lead in encouraging people to vaccinate.

“I think it’s the responsibility of traditional leadership to mobilise the communities to fight against any disaster. Now, in this case, where there is calamity of disease, we have to mobilise our community to take the vaccine.”

Traditional and religious leaders urged to help government endorse vaccinations:

The Youth of Mabeskraal village used the moment to get their jab of the vaccine.

“They must come and get the vaccine to make life easier, to open most of the things, just because for now, lot of things were not achieved because of COVID.”

“I’m encouraging you all to come and vaccinate. The vaccination is not the problem, but the problem is us.”

Currently, there are 2 457 active COVID-19 cases in the North West – with a cumulative number of over 1 million.

So far, over one million people have vaccinated in the province.
