The Institute for Security Studies says visible policing is key to reducing crime especially during the festive season.

The ISS says crime almost doubles in December compared to any other month of the year.

Head of the Crime and Justice Division at the ISS, Gareth Newham, says people need to be aware of their surroundings at all times to avoid falling victim to crime.

He says the most important thing is to be a bit more vigilant especially when in crowded areas.

“Do not get too intoxicated because criminals will definitely want to take advantage of people who are visibly intoxicated and trying to draw money from an ATM. Yes, its good to relax but also keep your eye’s open and do not do anything that will put you at risk,” says Newham.
