Veteran photographer David Goldblatt dies

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his condolences on the passing of renowned photographer, David Goldblatt.

The 87 year old is one of South Africa’s most celebrated and internationally acclaimed documentary photographers.

He was also a recipient of the National Order of Ikhamanga.

Goldblatt was born in November 1930. He documented oppression since the National Party came to power in 1948 and became the first South African to hold a one-person exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

His many accolades include the Hasselblad Award‚ the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award and the International Centre for Photography Cornell Capa Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also an honorary fellow of The Royal Photographic Society.

He is the founder of the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Goldblatt’s funeral will be held at West Park cemetery, at noon on Tuesday, followed by a memorial service at the Goodman Gallery.
