Two Lesotho radio stations off air

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Two Lesotho radio stations broadcasting with government controlled transmitters have been off air since Thursday.

Some allege that the Communications Minister Serialong Qoo ordered that the radio stations be cut off.

The Minister, also a spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Democratic Congress has not responded to the allegation.

Most privately owned Lesotho radio stations rely on government infrastructure to go on air.

Whenever political tensions rise unwritten threats are made that those broadcasting anti-government content risk being cut off.

At the height of tensions in 2O14 eye witnesses saw a heavy army contingent at the government transmitters before some radio stations went off air, but then the army claimed ignorance.
