Tshwane outsourced security officers threaten to intensify strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

City of Tshwane security officers have threatened to intensify their protest demanding to be in-sourced by the Metro’s security unit. They fear that more than 3 000 of them will be jobless from 1 February.

This follows the City’s plans to substantially reduce the number of areas to be secured by outsourced security officers.

The reduction is allegedly linked to the municipality’s failure to pay security companies after the City’s security service budget of more than R240 million was depleted. A handful of security officers have gathered outside of Tshwane House to picket against the looming job losses.

One of the protest organisers, Christopher Ramogwa says some of the security officers say they have not been paid for the past three months.

Ramogwa says they cannot allow any job losses.

“We are demanding to the City of Tshwane to stop this thing of reduction of security officers. So, they’re saying they’re going to reduce 60% per company. They must stop this thing of bloodshed. They must insource us. Then they will save a lot of money.”
