The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) and Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders have expressed dissatisfaction over what they call government’s lack of commitment in solving various challenges affecting the jurisdiction of traditional leaders.
The two houses had engagements with Deputy President David Mabuza in Polokwane, Limpopo.
Recognised by Chapter 11 of the constitution, traditional leaders and councils are key institutions in governance.
But traditional leaders believe government has relegated them to a simple ceremonial role.
With delays in finalising the traditional courts’ bill, traditional leaders feel their hands are tight concerning the fight against crime in their communities.
Chairperson of the Limpopo Contralesa Kgoshi Letsiri Phaahla says: “I am very disappointed with lack of commitment in dealing with the issue concerning traditional courts’ bill. There is a perception that it discriminates against women which is not true.”
Traditional leaders have also appealed to government to raise their monthly stipend. They currently earn just over R19 000 per month.
Mabuza has acknowledged that government has failed traditional leadership.
Deputy President David Mabuza says: ” I apologize on behalf of government for failing to deliver on certain things, and I am making a commitment that they will deal with the issues as they are already at the President’s office.”
Mabuza has also committed to resolving the backlog of delivering vehicles to traditional leaders.
