Emergency services at the Limpopo crash.

Six people, including four children, have been killed in a collision between a bakkie and a truck and trailer on the N1 south near the Nyl toll plaza outside Mokopane in Limpopo.

Two people sustained serious injuries and have been transported to the Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane for urgent care.

ER24 says when they arrived at the scene they found that the four children and two adults who were all occupants of the bakkie had already succumbed to their injuries.

The N1 south in the area has been closed and motorists have been advised to use the R101.

Crash on N1 in Limpopo claims six lives:

Transport Department spokesperson Mike Maringa says it appears that the bakkie’s tyre burst.

“We can confirm that six people were killed and two were seriously hurt in a head-on crash involving a truck and a Toyota Hilux double cab. According to our preliminary investigations it appears as if the bakkie’s tyre burst, the driver lost control and faced oncoming collided head-on with a truck, six occupants being four children from the van and two adults from the van were killed instantly.”

Meanwhile, several motorists have been arrested and charged with driving under the influence at a roadblock along the R71 outside Polokwane in Limpopo.

The Transport Department says more than 2000 motorists have been arrested for different transgressions since the start of the festive season.
