Reading Time: 2 minutes

Police have opened a case of abandonment after a newborn baby was found at the entrance of the SAPS Mount Road police station in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape in the early hours of this morning.

Detectives are looking for the mother of the baby boy.

Police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu is pleading with the public to assist the police in tracing the woman.

“It is alleged that at about 02:00, as a police official was walking towards the vehicle, she heard the sound of a crying baby coming from the entrance at the pedestrian gate. The baby was found on the floor in the corner. He was wrapped in a black and brown towel and a white blanket.”

“The child was taken to Dora Nginza Hospital. A case of child abandonment was opened for investigation. Anyone who can assist in tracing the mother or may know of anyone who may have been recently pregnant and no longer has a child is asked to contact SAPS Mount Road on 041 3946316,” adds Naidu.
