Residents of the Makhonyi Village in Jozini, Northern KwaZulu-Natal have been left destitute after heavy rains floods destroyed their homes.

Flooding in the area started yesterday morning which prompted schools to close early as classrooms were flooded.

Residents are still unable to go in and out of the area as bridges were destroyed and rivers flooded.

Ward 5 councillor Bonginkosi Mahaye says emergency services including disaster management have managed to reach the community and are assessing the damage.

“Disaster Management is at the scene taking notes of the damage as a result of the floods. Those whose houses were struck by lightning are taking out their furniture and food outside to dry. It’s still raining but not as much as yesterday. Disaster management officials are on their way with food and blankets for those who were left destitute.”
