SA’s Constitution enables the SABC to fulfill its mandate as a public broadcaster: Sachs

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Anti-apartheid activist and former Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs says the country’s Constitution has enabled the SABC to fulfill its mandate as a public broadcaster.

He was speaking to the SABC after the country marked the 25th anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s signing of the Constitution in Sharpville in the Vaal.

This as some people say the document does not uphold their rights. Others, however, say the Constitution itself is progressive but elected officials are failing to implement it.

Sachs says media organisations including the SABC should appreciate the document because it is a triumph of human endeavour and idealism.

“The SABC has gone through a lot and has come out so much better, apparently because we have the Constitution. People have a right to complain when they feel they are not happy about something because we have a strong civil society. This is a hugely successful area, the constitutional aspect of our constitution is very, very strong.”
