The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on Saturday, concluded its three-day COVID-19 vaccination drive at its head office in Auckland Park in Johannesburg.
The public broadcaster had collaborated with the Gauteng Health Department to administer COVID-19 vaccinations at the public broadcaster’s headquarters.
People flocked to the pop-up site in their numbers to get vaccinated.
For the past three days, the SABC head office has been a hive of activities.
The initiative was aimed at attracting SABC employees, students and members of the public. It also aimed to raise awareness around COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy.
SABC Board Chairperson, Bongamusa Makhathini, says they will continue to do their part as the broadcaster to educate the public about vaccination.
“For South Africans, SABC will always do its part and we will use our channels and every other resource that we have to play our role because we understand the importance of South Africans getting vaccinated. We understand the importance of our economy really getting going, and it all depends on us, as South Africans, really coming out in our numbers getting vaccinated,” says Makhathini.
About 1900 people have been vaccinated by 15:00 on Saturday. Gauteng Health Spokesperson, Kwara Kekana, says they are happy with the turnout.
“We are very pleased with the turnout. We saw close to 600 people coming out. Young people included. You know this place is surrounded by UJ , Wits, AFD and the school of sound engineering. On the second day, there was a great turnout, over 700 people,’ said Kekana on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s very important for our people to vaccinate, especially our young people, because they are the ones who are very active and they will take this disease home to the elders. And when our elders pass on we lose our history,” said on of the people at the SABC for vaccination.
The Gauteng government says it will continue to do pop-up vaccination sites in different parts of the province.
