Former co-chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee on COVID-19 Professor Salim Abdool Karim says South African has no choice but to introduce the vaccination certificate because that is the direction in which other regions of the world are headed.

The Department of Health says its system to access COVID-19 digital vaccination certificates is still in a trial phase.

It says it wants to resolve all glitches ahead of the formal launch later this week.

The department says it has received numerous complaints of people not being able to access the certificate.

The digital COVID-19 vaccine certificate can only be accessed by people who are fully vaccinated.

In his last address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country would soon have a standardised proof of vaccination to facilitate travel and other activities.
