South Africa’s COVID-19 digital vaccine certificate, which features a scannable QR code, went live today, despite no official launch by the National Department of Health.

In his last address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country would soon have a standardised proof of vaccination to facilitate travel and other activities.

The digital COVID-19 vaccine certificate can only be accessed by people who are fully vaccinated.

The system, which produces a digital copy of the physical vaccine card, is linked to the Health Department’s Electronic Vaccination Data System.

The move comes as the government begins to ease lockdown restrictions and allows more sectors of the economy to fully operate.

President Ramaphosa told the nation that, vaccinations will also go a long way towards getting a number of international travel restrictions from and into South Africa eased.
