The community of Ramotshana in Rustenburg have evicted a foreign national alleged to be a drug lord, as well as a woman suspected of prostitution. They have also handed over two men for allegedly being in possession of and using drugs.

The residents say they embarked on operation “Hlasela” over the weekend, whose aim was to chase all the drug users, drug lords, prostitutes, and to close all the unlicensed liquor outlets.

The operation follows the torching of several properties alleged to be brothels and drug dens in the Rustenburg CBD.

“We’ve told ourselves that we will clean Ramotshana. We will not allow any wrongdoing here in Ramotshana. Parents who are harbouring drug users, will also be chased out of this area,” said a ward councilor Vusi Wolf, who led the operation.

North West Police Spokesperson Adele Myburgh has confirmed the arrest of two suspects. She says they welcome initiatives by residents to work with police in rooting out social ills in their communities

“Two suspects were arrested by police after they were handed over by community members for being in possession of nyaope and dagga, as well as a dangerous weapon. These two suspects, aged 20 and 18 years old will appear in the Rustenburg Magistrate Court,” she said.
