President Cyril Ramaphosa says he is deeply concerned about America’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, calling it a step backwards.
US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Tuesday.
The US decision could have an adverse effect on countries trading with Iran.

Signed in 2015 by the world’s most powerful countries that include Britain, Russia, France, China, Germany and the European Union, the plan was a framework under which Iran can pursue its nuclear capabilities for civilian purposes.
But Trump has always been critical of the Iranian deal despite the International Atomic Energy Agency’s confirmation that Tehran is in compliance with its obligations.
Trump’s withdrawal from the deal has left President Ramaphosa deeply concerned.
The President says this flies in the face of multi-lateral diplomacy and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
He adds that since its adoption, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action has reduced tension between Iran and the West.
