Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s royal lineage

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi was the longest-serving AmaZulu Traditional Prime Minister to 3 successive Zulu kings, dating back to King Cyprian Bhekuzulu, and spearheaded the installation of King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s ascension to the throne.

He passed away on Saturday at the age of 95.

Buthelezi had been discharged from hospital just last week after being hospitalised over complications following a procedure in July.

Buthelezi, born to Chief Mathole Buthelezi and Princess Magogo kaDinuzulu, boasts a lineage deeply rooted in Zulu royalty. His maternal lineage traces back to King Solomon kaDinizulu, connecting him directly to King Shaka, the illustrious founder of the Zulu nation. On his father’s side, his great-grandfather was Chief Mnyamana Buthelezi, who served as Prime Minister to King Cetshwayo.

The Prince got married to the late Irene Audrey Thandekile Mzila on the 2nd of July 1952.
