The Mveku family in Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape is shocked and traumatised after three children between three and seven years old drowned in the Mnenu dam that separates Port St Johns and Ngqeleni.

The children went missing last Friday.

Villagers and police started to search for their bodies.

Divers were called to assist in the search and the bodies were retrieved from the dam.

Family spokesperson Nomvakaliso Mveku says they are still traumatised.

“These kids were playing outside and after a short time, we could not locate them. But the fourth child came back and she told us that she left them behind, they were busy swimming in the dam. We went to look for them, but we could not get them. And then yesterday, police and divers were called to help us search for the kids. Their bodies were retrieved from the dam.”
