Political squabbles in parly continue during SONA debate

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Political squabbles in parliament have continued among political parties on the second and last day of the debate in reflection on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week.

The majority of parties on the opposition benches have criticised the SONA since the first day of the debate.

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde was the sole premier who entered the fray against Ramaphosa and his party the ANC.

“Today, I want to tell you the tale of two parties. I want to tell a tale of a party of failure; a party of the ANC that cannot keep the lights on; a party that cannot keep trains running; a party that cannot keep Transnet underpinning the economy costing R1 billion a day; a party that cannot keep up ports operations costing us R200 million a day. A party that has given us the highest unemployment rate in the world; that party who knows not how to deal with corruption and state capture.”

National Freedom Party member of parliament Shaik Emam has, meanwhile, warned the DA in the Western Cape not to allow its support for Israel to hamper the autonomy of the province.

Emam said this during the last day of the debate in parliament.

SomeDA MPs have criticised government for its stance in support of the Palestine in the Israel-Hamas war.

Emam gave a stern warning that the province will be a bloodbath should the DA involve outsiders in governing the province.

“But let me give a loud and clear message to the Democratic Alliance. If you think that the people of South Africa are going to allow you and take this beautiful country and the city of Cape Town of ours and hand it over to the Zionist, the City of Cape Town will be a bloodbath. I can assure you we will not allow you to take this and sell it, and sell your principles, ethics and values like you have just stolen the land in the Western Cape to the United States and others. We will not allow you to make it the Jewish state. So, my message to all South Africans is loud and clear: if you want another Palestine in the Western Cape, you gonna go back to the days of apartheid.”
