Police nab 69-year-old for alleged abalone possession

Police in Robertson, Boland, Western Cape, have arrested a 69-year-old man suspected of possessing abalone valued at more than R347 000.

Police spokesperson, Fredrick van Wyk, says that they had acted on a tip-off about a vehicle that was transporting the abalone from Gansbaai.

He says the suspect attempted to flee when he spotted the police in Voortrekker Road.

“The vehicle was stopped and searched at the Shell garage in Robertson and a total of 1247 units of abalone were found in the vehicle and confiscated. The suspect will appear in the Robertson Magistrates court on Monday, 2024-01-15 on a charge of possession of abalone.”
