Orlando Pirates claimed its third Soweto derby victory of the season over Kaizer Chiefs with a 2-1 win at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates moved to fourth spot on the log after a 2-1 win in the DSTV Premiership encounter at the Orlando Stadium. The Buccanners now trail log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by five points.

Orlando Pirates came into the encounter as slight favourites after registering two wins against their bitter Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs in the MTN-8 earlier this season.

Pirates won 3-0 at this venue the last time the two teams played in a cup match October 2020. But Amakhosi boast two wins in a row against Bucs in the league last season.

However, both teams have been very inconsistent in the league so far this season. After three wins in a row in the DSTV Premiership, Chiefs were unable to win their last two matches.

On the other hand, Pirates could only manage a single win in their last four matches, with just a single win and two draws. After a slow start the match came to life in the 19th minute after this goalmouth scramble.

Four minutes later danger man Samir Nurkovic showed good control, but his attempt went wide. Later in the half, Pirates started going forward in search of a goal.

Their effort was finally rewarded in the 38th minute with Thembinkosi Lorch breaking the deadlock after a defensive blunder by Reeve Frosler.

Pirates nearly doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time, but Fortune Makaringe decided to pass instead of taking a shot.

Chiefs got a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty early in the second half.

But Nurkovic was denied by Richard Ofori from the spot, with Siyabonga Ngezana missing the rebound.

The visitors camped in the Pirates half in search of an equaliser without luck. After 65 minutes of play Chiefs had 15 goal attempts compared to Pirates’ three.

Pirates launched a counter attack and Vincent Pule was brought down inside the box but the referee Luxolo Badi waved play on.

This led to three yellow cards after a big protest by Pirates players. Substitute Siphesihle Ndlovu made it 2-0 after good play by Paseka Mako on the left flank in the 80th minute.

Pirates defence failed to clear their lines and Daniel Cardoso capitalised by finding the back of the net. Chiefs pushed forward to get the equaliser but the game ended 2-1.
