One young man died and two others are still missing when they were caught in a rip-current on Wednesday at Wells Estate, Port Elizaberth.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Spokesperson Craig Lambinon says a fourth man aged 28, then entered the water to assist them, the two adult males disappeared in the water and are still missing.

Lambinon says a search by the NSRI and Nelson Mandela Bay lifeguards was unsuccessful.

After no sign of the missing men were found the search and recovery operation was taken over by the police.

The body of the deceased teenager has been taken into the care of the government pathology services and the police have opened an inquest docket.
