The Free State O.R. Tambo marathon continues to attract athletes locally and in the neighbouring countries.
Despite the decline in the number of the athletes taking part this year, the Department of Sport, arts and culture says the race remains one of their flagship programme.
The Department’s head, Stanley Malope says they are happy about the progress made so far.
“…but we are excited as the Department that we are keeping on… this is actually having attraction from outside countries – we are having Kenyans, Zimbabweans, Lesotho so it’s attracting people from outside. So we are happy that it’s not a provincial thing, it’s actually becoming a national thing if you like… but we are very excited and we are hoping that this time around it will be taken by a South African.”
