Higher Education Minister, Naledi Pandor,  says former National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) chair Sizwe Nxasana didn’t leave the organisation in disarray.

Nxasana resigned last week as chair of NSFAS, a position he held for three years.

His resignation came after Pandor told NSFAS not to open student applications for 2019 before sorting out the 2017 and 2018 funding backlog.

Pandor held a meeting on Friday with the board and appointed a new chair as well as announcing an administrator for NSFAS.

“We have had a board meeting and Professor Neil Garrod has been appointed as the new chair of the board.”

It is not true that money has run out. There are funds that have been set aside by government,” says Pandor.

She says her concerns have been the inadequate processing of applications and the fact that allowances and other funds have not been getting to the students and the institutions on time.
