About 29 political parties will be contesting the elections in the North West province.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in the North West says it is more than ready in administering free and fair elections in the province.

The Commission says over 1 700 voting stations are expected to be opened on the May 8th elections.

29 political parties will be contesting the elections in the province.

IEC provincial head, Dr Tumelontle Thiba says,“We are ready, we have in total 1 733 voting stations – some of which are temporary and others are voting centres. There are 29 political parties contesting the coming elections and we hope now that the parties have signed the code of conduct that everything will go according to plan.”

However, Thiba says they are concerned about the increasing service delivery protests in the province.

“We trying our level best to communicate with communities – to appeal to them that they should love their country enough to allow the change of government to happen through a peaceful means. The electorate should be given an opportunity to choose the representatives because the one option we have in this country really is electoral democracy. Once governments are changed through a coup we will not have peace in our country.”
