The Nelson Mandela Drive into Mthatha in the Eastern Cape has been opened after protesting students blockaded the road earlier this morning.

Students of the Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha used burning tyres and rocks to blockade the road.

In Gqeberha, a group of the Nelson Mandela University students is also protesting.

Reports say the protests are related to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme defunding of students.

Police are on both scenes to monitor the situation.
