MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga Vusi Shongwe has called on motorists to comply with road rules or face the full might of the law.

The MEC was conducting a stop and check at the Machadodorp Tollgate Plaza on the N4 in Mpumalanga on Wednesday.

Traffic fines for non-compliance and violating road rules were issued to motorists. Road users have been cautioned against violating road rules. Those found on the wrong side will be fined or arrested.

Traffic officers are out in full force on the Mpumalanga roads. Busy roads such as the N4, N11, the R40 and the N17 will be manned by roadblocks.

“Some of them are not complying, and some are using number plates that are not in terms of regulation and the traffic officers have removed them and given them ticket and some the licence disc are not up to scratch and have got some tickets for all that and licences have expired and are not complying in terms of the amnesty that was given by the national government,” says Vusi Shongwe.

For some motorists, this operation is a huge inconvenience. But others are excited to see the operations taking place.

“It’s very good that they are controlling all the traffic and that they are checking the vehicles especially during this time of the year. We are happy to see police visible on the road, we travelling well and the roads are in good condition, we from Johannesburg going to Maputo,” says Motorist

The busy N4 is already packed with traffic. TRAC N4 has put in place measures that will ensure the free flow of traffic.

“Traffic on the N4 route between Tshwane and Maputo Mozambique is expected to increase substantially today the 15th of December to the 17th of December with many making their way to popular tourist destinations of Mpumalanga,” says TRAC spokesperson Solange Soares-Nicholson.

More traffic officers will be deployed on the roads to ensure visibility throughout the day and night.
