Mother of nine-year-old rape victim disappointed in justice system

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Cape Town mother of a nine-year-old disabled girl, who has allegedly been raped, believes the justice system has failed her child.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect the child’s identity, is adamant that the assault took place at the girl’s special needs school in Delft.

The child has since been removed from the school.  A medical examination confirmed the rape and a charge has been laid.

Police say the docket has been closed due to insufficient evidence.

The girl was diagnosed with meningitis soon after birth and is wheelchair-bound and unable to speak.

Her mother, a domestic worker, says her child’s rights are being ignored.
