Minister Mokonyane says in order to improve things at the SABC, her department will look at the SABC's public mandate, scope, size, governance and accountability.

Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane says her department is determined to restore the SABC’s financial stability and editorial credibility.

She was delivering her budget vote speech in Parliament on Thursday.

Mokonyane says the total budget for the department is R1.5 Billion.

She says the department will look at the SABC’s public mandate, scope, size, governance and accountability to improve the public broadcaster.

She says, “We are determined to restore the SABC to financial stability, working together with the Board and the Department of Finance.”

“We are also determined to restore the editorial credibility and to being a public broadcaster of integrity that supports our objectives of social cohesion and nation building,” she adds.

Mokonyane also says, “The amount of issues require a focussed discussion on the SABC in respect of its public mandate, scope, size, governance and accountability and how it can seek to get additional resources outside of being dependent on the fiscus.”
