Metrorail trains inhumane: Cape Chamber of Commerce

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has described the conditions of Metrorail trains as inhumane.

On Thursday, chamber president, Janine Myburgh and Mayco Member for Transport, Brett Herron, took the train at Kraaifontein during peak hours to experience current conditions.

Myburgh says overcrowding and a lack of safety are commuters’ biggest concerns.

On Monday, Metrorail in the Western Cape suspended its entire central line due to critical infrastructure damage, affecting thousands of commuters.

The line is back online with a limited service.

“Conditions are inhumane and much worse than one could imagine. At one stage, I dropped a bottle of water, but it never went further than my chest because it remained wedged between me and the people around me. The doors were open most of the time and I was told by the commuters that this was so that they wouldn’t suffocate” explains Myburgh.
