Memorial service under way for fallen mineworkers

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A memorial service for the seven mineworkers, who died last week at the Sibanye-Stillwater mine just outside Carltonville on Gauteng’s West Rand, is under way at the Masizakhele Stadium.

Last Thursday, 13 workers were trapped underground after three seismic events which resulted in the deaths of the seven workers.

Sibanye-Stillwater says the other six miners are recovering and are in a stable condition. Thousands of mineworkers, family members and members of government have packed the Masizakhele Stadium in Driefontein to pay their last respects to the miners who lost their lives.

Chairperson of Sibanye Gold, Sello Moloko, has assured families that they will be provided with financial assistance to assist them during this tough time. He says they are committed to prevent any future occurrences.

In the last five months, 10 miners lost their lives at Sibanye Gold mines across the country.

Several South African personalities, citizens, and others expressed their condolences for the families of the miners and of the situation itself.
