Management of the Sibanye-Stillwater mine in Carletonville has confirmed that the bodies of all seven mineworkers who were trapped underground after a seismic event have been retrieved.

Thirteen mineworkers were trapped three kilometres underground on Thursday.

Six other mineworkers are recovering in hospital.

The mine’s James Wellstead  says, “So very tragic… but we’re grateful to have now completed the search and rescue operations. First of all, everybody who has been involved, which includes all the stakeholders, will have a bit of a rest and then we’ll start to engage with the unions on the way forward… as well as with the DMR (Department of Mineral Resources). There will be an investigation that will be carried out with the DMR, and then a decision will be made about what remedial action is necessary, and then we’ll engage with the unions also about how to deal with the mourning period.”
