National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula maintains her innocence following allegations that she received bribes amounting to R2. 3 million while she served as Defence Minister.

A weekend newspaper reported that Mapisa-Nqakula allegedly received ten payments on different occasions from a contractor for the SANDF.

The allegations were reportedly made in an affidavit to the Investigating Directorate.

Through her special advisor Mike Ramagoma, Mapisa-Nqakula says she heard about the investigation via the newspaper article.

“The Speaker first learned about this investigation and the allegations concerned through the article yesterday. As concerned as she is about how the purported investigation was communicated, she remains committed to cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies. She maintains her innocence, as she has always done. ever since these allegations came to light in 2019 or so. Let the investigation continue, she will cooperate and then we will know what the real truth is.”
