Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe is expected to visit the Sibanye-Stillwater mine’s Ikamva shaft, West of Johannesburg, later on Tuesday.

Four miners died at the mine after succumbing to heat and gas underground.  One miner is still missing.

As the search continues for a fifth Sibanye Stillwater miner, calls mount for decisive action against the mine and its executives.

It’s yet to be determined if they were instructed to enter the shaft or if they were off duty.

An investigation is underway.

Last month seven miners died at the company’s Masakhane shaft.

“The safety of mine workers and communities must receive the sharpest and special attention. It is with this reason that the minister later today (Tuesday) will visit the mine just to get updates on what has happened and also with the managers there of the mine. Then we will look at the plans that we’ll be taken going forward, also with the inspectors who are currently at the mine now,” says Spokesperson for the Mineral Resources Department, Nathi Shabangu.
