Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Mamelodi Sundowns consolidated their position at the top of the ABSA Premiership log by beating Ajax Cape Town 2-1 at the Cape Town stadium on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians came from a goal down to seal a victory away from home.

They now have 31 points from 16 matches and are four points clear of Cape Town City, following a disappointing 3-2 loss away to Polokwane City last weekend.

Sundowns were keen to make amends when they took on Ajax Cape Town in the Mother City.

The Urban Warriors, on the other hand, were looking for maximum points to move away from the relegation zone.

Fagrie Lakay, who is on loan from Supersport United, gave the Muhsin Ertugral-led side some hope with his goal.

The goal, however, seemed to have motivated Sundowns who literally camped in Ajax’s half.

The home side was under immense pressure and something had to give.

Brazilian centre-back, Ricardo Nascimento stepped up and made it 1-all.

The Pitso Mosimane-led troops were not done, two minutes later, Sibusiso Vilakazi connected with a Percy Tau cross to make it 2-1 to Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Pitso Mosimane says:”I am happy with the images that I see there, good response, they showed integrity, experience to manage the game. We didn’t play much pretty football in the last 20 minutes, that’s champion’s league experience we got playing in Africa. I am happy with the mentality, it was good.”

Sundowns next take on Orlando Pirates in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon, while Ajax will be at home against Platinum Stars on Friday evening.

And Mosimane is already planning for the Saturday match.

“Thapelo has a dead leg but he will be okay for Pirates’ game, we are managing him for Pirates and also giving a chance to the youngster Keletso, he deserves a little bit of a chance.”

Meanwhile on Wednesday evening, Bidvest Wits will host 12th placed Supersport United in Johannesburg.

The Clever Boys, who are defending champions, are at the bottom of the standings with eleven points from 15 matches.
