Premier Supra Mahumapelo says he believes that he has the support of the majority of the people of the North West province.

His comment comes despite violent protests in the province, calling for him to step down.

Over 700 shops belonging to foreign nationals have been destroyed through looting and vandalism in Mahikeng during the recent violent protests.

Police say they’ve arrested over 340 people since the protests started about two weeks ago.

Mahumapelo, who is accused of being involved in corruption, claims he is enjoying support from the locals.

“The people of the North West are saying we don’t want to embark on this violence that we see, Premier. We don’t want to fight back these people who are violent and so on. We don’t want to exacerbate the situation. The churches have been calling me, the traditional leaders have met with me, the business people have been calling. Others have been writing to the office and they are saying they are with me. An overwhelming majority of the people in the province are saying through their messages that we are with you. We can see there are people using social media.”
