Madikizela-Mandela hailed as a heroine that put others first

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has been hailed as a heroine that put others before her. Northern Cape Education MEC, Martha Bartlett, has praised Madikizela-Mandela for her dedication to fighting against the patriarchal system. Bartlett was speaking at the provincial memorial service of the struggle stalwart.

“We shall remember Mama Winnie for her militancy, her courage and defiance that kept the struggle of apartheid alive. She fought against the unjust apartheid laws. She defied the patriarchal role against women. She understood that women’s emancipation requires fortitude. She understood that women’s rights are human rights,” Bartlett said.

Northern Cape ANC Veterans’ Secretary Violet Meruti has described Madikizela-Mandela, who was affectionately called the ‘Mother of the Nation’ as a beacon of hope for the oppressed.

Meruti says Madikizela-Mandela always stood firm against corruption. “Mama Winnie was outspoken and she hated corruption. Even at the December national conference, she told our leaders that corruption must end, she was the beacon of hope, she was not afraid to go to skwatta camps, those are the people Mama Winnie cared about.” Click below for more on the story:
