Limpopo Social Development Department provides support for people affected by COVID-19, GBV

The Social Development Department in Limpopo says it is providing psychological support to people who are affected by the coronavirus as well as those affected by Gender-Based Violence.

Department spokesperson Witness Tiva says social workers have already rendered psychological support services to more than 41 000 people who tested positive for coronavirus and over 1000 GBV cases since the start of the lockdown in March last year.

“Our social workers who have been strategically deployed across the five districts of the province remain committed to ensuring that they assist our people to cope during this unprecedented period, as there’s a lot of anxiety, fear and uncertainty among the residents during the second wave of the global pandemic.”

South Africa has recorded 15 002 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the past 24-hours, bringing the total number of cases to 1 088 889.

The country has also recorded 288 new COVID-19 related fatalities, pushing the death toll to 29 175.

Most of the new deaths were recorded in the Western Cape.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says ,“Regrettably, 288 more COVID-19 related deaths: Eastern Cape 92, Free State 9, Gauteng 39, KwaZulu-Natal 29, Mpumalanga 6, Northern Cape 2 and Western Cape 111. This brings the total to 29 175.”

Recoveries now stand at 897 704, representing a recovery rate of 82,4%
