Limpopo communities face water shortages since May

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The communities of Mohlaba, Petanenge, Zanghoma and Sasekani outside Tzaneen in Limpopo say they have been experiencing water shortages since last year.

Residents say they are experiencing consistent water shortages despite the Mopani District Municipality implementing a multi-million rand water project.

They say the pipes installed during this phase of the project never supplied water to their homes.

The community says they are also no longer getting water from the pipes on the streets since May last year.

One resident says, “We have been without water since May last year when the Mopani District Municipality appointed contractors to do household water reticulations.”

Another resident says, “We have been going to the Mopani Municipality since last year to consult about water provision without positive response.”

“In Ward 24, all the project could not be finished so that we could have water, they only put pipes which are just abandoned now,” a community member adds.

The Mopani District Municipality Spokesperson, Odus Ngoveni says that water supply will be restored to communities once the next phase of the project is implemented.

Ngoveni says, “We are implementing a multi-year as part of Ritavi Water Scheme and Mohlaba is one of the villages that are supposed to benefit from that. We are not done with the project, we are almost there. We have just advertised phase 4 D which ultimately should bring us closer to completion of the project.”
