Constitution on land is perfect, govt remains the problem: Lekota

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Congress of the People (COPE) leader Terror Lekota believes the country’s constitution on land is perfect.  However, he says the problem is with those who are running government.

Lekota was among the political parties, civil moments and academics that participated in a seminar on land expropriation without compensation that UNISA hosted in Pretoria on Monday.

Lekota says it’s important for government to expedite the resolution of the land question.

“So the critical question is the question of why is it taking so long? If the fault lies in the men and women you put in government, who abuse taxes, profits that come in that they take them and go give them to the Guptas…”

Lekota says the problem is that government has been inefficient, “Look at SAA, Eskom and all we inherited from the old order… profits which we would have taken and pay for free education for our children and to provide houses and all that.”

Meanwhile a researcher has called on government to create land consciousness among South Africans.  Professor Tshepo Lepakga, has made this call as the debate on land expropriation without compensation intensifies.

Lepakga says the government is taking too long to resolve the land question.

Sections 25 and 36 of Constitution also came under the spotlight at a seminar.

Political parties, researchers and academics were part of the debate. Some argued that the current legislation could still be used to expropriate land without compensation while others said there was a need to amend the current legislation to expropriate land without compensation.
