KZN ANCWL calls for gender balance in political parties

The African National Congress Women’s League(ANCWL) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on all political parties to ensure gender balance in its national leadership structures in honour of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela‘s Legacy.

The women’s structure was making reference to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) recent elective congress which saw only one woman elected to its top structure.

Madikizela-Mandela was the Women’s League president in 1993 and a strong advocate of women’s rights. The league says that the DA‘s new leadership is a regression of all her efforts.

“If all party lists can have 50% women and maybe have laws which will empower the electoral commission itself to reject a party list which doesn’t reflect such; that is what we are looking for in this issue. If we can have the DA which has only one woman, it is embarrassing to us,” says ANCWL KZN Chairperson, Nonhlanhla Khoza.

The Women’s League in the province will conduct a series of community services, including social work duties, before a memorial service for Madikizela-Mandela is held later this week.
