The death toll from the floods that have ravaged KwaZulu-Natal has risen to 395. The provincial Department of Co-operative Affairs has cautioned residents following a weather warning of inclement weather conditions from this Friday afternoon.
The South African Weather Service has issued yet another alert of possible disruptive rains that could lead to localised flooding in some areas of KwaZulu-Natal.
Department spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila says disaster management teams remain on the ground.
“The death toll has increased in the province and it currently stands at 395. The MEC for Cogta, MEC Hlomuka has warned residents across the province to exercise utmost caution, as the department has received a weather warning from the south Florida, which indicates that (wet) conditions can be expected today, going into tomorrow, and Sunday. The weather warning also indicates that heavy rains can be expected in metro, Ugu District and a number of areas.”
Currently, authorities are busy with mop-up operations after heavy rains caused floods that affected
many communities this week.
“The weather alert for disruptive rains is expected to hit various parts of the province from this afternoon. Areas of concern include those along the coastline and in the midlands. The alert also warns of damaging winds. There are concerns the return of rain could hamper the progress that has been made in clean-up operations.”
