Over 24 babies have died following the Klebsiella outbreak at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand. This is according to nurses union Denosa.

The Union’s Bongani Ngxangase says they have been trying to get the Department of Health to pay attention to the outbreak for months now.

The Department insists that five babies have died – but that the situation is under control.

Ngxangase says he can’t rule out more deaths.

“Between now and July, we have about 24 babies that have died – we have that on record, names and file numbers that what we have collated. We can say it’s more, because other files have disappeared, data has been deleted – so that means there could be more. Why they are hiding, deleting data,we don’t know.”
