The former Vice Chancellor of the North West University and Vaal University of Technology Professor, Dan Kgwadi has been lauded for his contribution to the academics and for the empowerment of underprivileged youth.
Kgwadi, who died last week after an illness, was buried at the weekend in Mufufutso village near Khunwana, in North West.
The renowned academic also served as the first rector of the North West University’s Mahikeng campus for 10 years before becoming the Vice Chancellor of the university for seven years.

The North West government says Kgwadi mentored many people in his community.
Premier’s office Motlalepula Rosho says, “Professor Kgwadi was someone with a deep commitment to academic excellence and has provided selfless service to his community. This was demonstrated by mentorship programs in his community which also include career exhibitions for the local youth. Professor Kgwadi was a fearless leader who did not aspire to any populism. He was never afraid to take decisions, no matter how unpopular they might have been.”

The deceased’s friend and former Premier Supra Mahumapelo says Kgwadi had tried his best to transform the North West University.
“The integration of South Africa as a country is going to take many other decades to achieve, so we can’t isolate the university from the broader problems that we have. We must accept that he did his best to make sure that institution called North West University gets integrated in totality because currently, we are not convinced.”
