The High Court in Polokwane has reserved  judgment in the Sekhukhune Liquor Traders Association’s urgent application against the Limpopo Economic Development Department.

The association is seeking to interdict the department from implementing two regulations of the province’s Liquor Act.

The regulations restrict the sale of alcohol to midnight daily, and increase the liquor trading licence renewal fees.

The association and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) want the court to set aside the regulations, arguing that they will lead to loss of revenue and jobs.

The lawyer for the association, advocate Moruthane Maphutha has accused the department of not keeping its promise to consult them before implementing the regulations.

“Our knowledge at that time could not have tried urgency if he was still considering our submissions because he gave us a letter with a number to call them on that is what he did, despite the fact that we have a date you are giving the impression that I am still considering.”
