Hundreds of roads and bridges affected by floods: KZN Transport

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport says about 700 projects, including roads and bridges, have been badly affected by recent floods. They estimate this will cost the department about R3 billion.

Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says they will prioritise repairs in communities that have been completely cut off from critical services like schools, employment, and shops.

“It’s quite a lot of work that needs to be done, not only in Dududu but throughout the province of KwaZulu-Natal. We are going to prioritise areas where access is completely cut off; those are going to receive our maximum priority.

We have already sent out a team in the area of Dududu and many other areas where the movement has been cut off completely to make sure that those areas are thoroughly assessed and we restore mobility urgently. So, in that particular area, we already have a team that is on the ground conducting assessments and they will soon report to us as to how soon we can assist in terms of restoring those bridges.”
