Gauteng police warn motorists that they will be stopped, inspected for vehicles roadworthiness

The Gauteng Traffic Police have issued a notice to road users, especially those returning to the province after the long weekend, that they will be stopped and vehicles inspected for roadworthiness.

25 drivers were arrested in the province for driving under the influence of alcohol, over the long weekend and many were arrested for driving at excessive speeds.

A spokesperson for Gauteng Traffic Police, Obed Sibasa says, ”We have mounted roadblocks, stop and search operations, block patrols, also utilising drones to monitor highways and other roads.

“Motorists and other road users must expect to be stopped and searched, and vehicles inspected. Heightened police visibility. We appeal to drivers to adhere to the rules of the road, that is to comply,” Sibasa explains.

Meanwhile, one man has been killed and several others injured after a multi-vehicle collision on the N17 in Ekurhuleni east of Johannesburg over the long weekend.

Sibasa says 25 drivers have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol over the long weekend in Gauteng. He is urging those returning to the province today to obey the rules of the roads as officers will be out in full force.

”We arrested drivers for driving at excessive speeds. The highest speed recorded was 182 km per hour on the N12. We also recorded fatal crashes however still collating numbers. We saw a multi-vehicle collision involving three trucks, a bakkie, and 9 light motor vehicles on the N17 between Springs and Brakpan Ekurhuleni. An adult male died and seven others are fighting for their lives in hospital.”
