Residents of C section at Ntuzuma township in the north of Durban have criticised the eThekwini Municipality for the non delivery of water.

Several communities in the eThekwini Municipality are battling water shortages. Angry and frustrated residents claim they have been without water for more than eight weeks.

Eighty-year-old wheelchair-bound Nombuyiselo Blose is among them.

Blose speaks to the harsh, daily reality of life without water.

“It’s just a secluded area; water is not available in this area and we can’t even bath or brush our teeth. Whatever water you see here, I bought it from the stores. I’m 80 years-old and my husband is 83 years-old. I can’t even come out of the house unless someone puts me in this chair. Washing is the problem, toilets are stinking because we cannot flush and we are in dire need of water.”

eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda maintains that the municipality is working to restore water to the affected areas.

“In the south, we are struggling with around 80%, and in the north, 70%, which was affected, and this came in the middle of the work that we are doing to restore services, especially in the northern part of the city. We committed to the members of the public that we will resolve water by the end of February. We are happy that the teams have completed the valves that were being fixed but the challenge is that there are teams who operate filling our reservoirs.”
