The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that four police officers were arrested in Cradock, in the Eastern Cape, following the death of a man while in police custody. It is alleged that the officers hunted down the deceased after accusing him of being part of a group that robbed one of the policemen.

IPID Spokesperson Phaladi Shuping says the accused are facing charges of murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. He says they are expected to appear at the Cradock Magistrate’s Court on Friday for bail applications.

He was allegedly assaulted by the police officers and after assaulting the guy, they did not seek medical attention.

They just left him there. Unfortunately, he was found dead later; hence, there were investigations that were done and four police officers were arrested.

Initially, it was three that were arrested early last week but the fourth one was arrested late during the course of the week.
