Reading Time: < 1 minute

The trial of the four people accused of allegedly shooting former African National Congress (ANC) Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa will begin on Tuesday in the Pietermaritzburg High Court, more than five years after his death.

Magaqa’s murder was one of the high-profile cases that a commission of inquiry into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal probed. The commission looked at incidents that happened between 2011 and 2018.

Magaqa was a councillor in the uMzimkhulu Municipality in 2017 when gunmen opened fire on him and two other councillors in the town in southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Mlungisi Ncalane is expected to join his co-accused Sibonelo Myeza, Mbulelo Mpofana and Sibusiso Ncengwa in the dock in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. This after Judge Nonthuthuzelo Mlaba rolled the start of the trial over on Monday due to his absence.

The court heard that Ncalane was appearing in another case in the Maphumulo Magistrate’s Court.

The four men are facing charges of conspiracy to murder, murder, attempted murder, as well as the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
