Firefighters still battling to contain Kluitjieskraal blaze

Firefighters from the Cape Winelands District Municipality (CWDM) are still battling to contain a fire that broke out in Kluitjieskraal in the Boland on Monday.

Municipal spokesperson, Joanne Otto, says the location and ground conditions are making it difficult for crews to access the burning area above the mountains at night.

She says an aged pine tree plantation and strong winds are fuelling the fire.

Over 6 000 hectares of vegetation and about 40 informal structures have been gutted.

Otto says the fire spread from a small valley called Suurvlakte.

“The CWDM Fire Services will fly a reconnaissance flight this morning to establish a full picture of what occurred during the night to ensure effective deployment of resources. A number of fire crews and ground teams, who need to be relieved will come off the lines and be replaced with fresh crew teams this morning.”
